sh mountain biking: Big field for relay

30 Jan, 2002 07:45 AM

Saturday January 19 saw a larger than average crowd gather to contest a two-man team relay event.

The race involved teams of two who each ride a separate section of track and “tag” each other at the completion of each section.

The raced started hard with James Williamson opening up an early gap that was to prove decisive as the race progressed.

Richard Vollebregt was left wondering where his partner had got to early in the race and found that his partner’s skill level was a significant handicap to his team’s chances of victory.

Characteristically though, he chased hard.

Les Horvath was also handicapped with serious mechanical problems and he pulled out of the race early.

The team of James and Allen were victorious on the day with Lindsay and her partner finishing a close second.

The two-man team event is always popular with the participants and Saturday’s race was no exception.

Well done and thanks to everyone who showed up on the day.

Sunday saw the more dedicated members of the club travel to western Sydney for a cross-country race.

Congratulations to Johan JR who won the under 15 category in a sprint finish after two draining laps in tremendous heat.

This boy is showing some real potential.

Well done also to Johan Snr who had a competitive race in C grade and spent the rest of the day promoting the Southern Highlands Club to the 80 participants on the day.

The longest race of the day was the A grade men’s event which involved battling the dust and blistering heat for almost two hours.

Despite a terrible start that saw him at the back of the pack, James chased hard the whole race and was awarded a second place, just 20 seconds from the winner.

Once again the Southern Highlands mountain bikers proved themselves against more established clubs.

Our next ride will be at Penrose on Saturday afternoon.
