Sexton's CHS medal haul

14 Apr, 2004 01:00 PM
Bowral High School swimmer Orlanda Sexton scooped the pool at the NSW Combined High School (CHS) Swimming Championships at Homebush in the first week in April, taking home four gold and two silver medals.

Orlanda was represented her school and the South Coast district at the after qualifying for eight events at the regional trials at Dapto.

These events were the 50, 100, 200 and 400 metres Freestyle, 100 metres Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly and 200 metres Individual Medley.

Orlanda also swam an additional event, the 400 metres Individual Medley.

At CHS, all 50 and 100 metre events and the 200 Metres Freestyle are swum as heats and finals in which the 10 fastest progress to the final.

The 400 metres Freestyle and the 200 and 400 metres Individual Medley events are swum as "timed finals" with the top 10 fastest getting finalist ribbons and the medals determined by the three fastest times.

Orlanda swam in all events she qualified for and made the finals in all events she swam and so had a very large program of 15 swims over the three days.

Orlanda reached top 10 in all nine events, winning four gold medals and two silver medals.

Although still 15, Orlanda competed in the 16 Years age group in which she won the points score and was thus 16 Year Girl State CHS Age champion.

The teenager won gold in the 100 and 200 metre freestyle, the 100m butterfly and the 400m individual medley, while she finished second in the 400m free and the 200m IM.

Her results from each event were: 50 Metres Freestyle - 4th; 100 Metres Freestyle - Gold Medal; 200 Metres Freestyle - Gold Medal; 400 Metres Freestyle - Silver Medal; 100 Metres Breaststroke - 8th; 100 Metres Backstroke - 8th; 100 Metres Butterfly - Gold Medal; 200 Metres Individual Medley - Silver Medal; 400 Metres Individual Medley - Gold Medal.

Orlanda's success at CHS follows her swims at the New Zealand National Age Group Championships representing NSW as part of the NZ Touring Team.

At these championships in March, Orlanda competed in five events and won a gold medal in the 100 metres butterfly and a bronze medal in the 400 metres freestyle.

Just prior to CHS, Orlanda competed in three events at the Australian Open Championships (Olympic Trials).

She swam in the 50 and 100 metres butterfly and the 200 metres freestyle and had a wonderful experience in the 50 metres butterfly where she swam in the same heat as Australian swimming legend Shane Gould.

There is no time to rest for Orlanda who flew to Perth over the weekend to compete in the Australian Age Championships, where she will be competing in seven events.
