THE 2000 Burradoo polocrosse season drew to a close on Saturday October 14, when they held their annual presentation night at the Sutton Forest Inn.
With roughly 50 members and guests in attendance it proved to be a very successful evening.
This year the club has been very successful not only within our own zone but they have had a number of players representing the Southern Highlands as well as NSW. Also we had players represented at the Hawkesbury Olympic Championships as well as at the Sydney Olympics. This was a chance of a lifetime as they played during the break in the dressage and jumping as a demonstration sport to promote the Australian Stock Horse.
The night got under way with the new club president Louise Campbell congratulating the club on a great year of polocrosse. She then went on to announce the Year 2000 winners.
Starting with the up and coming players of the club the under 16 juniors who all made a fantastic effort throughout the season.
The sub junior encouragement award (donated by Graeme Spackman) was won by Casey Russell.
Matthew Yeo who represented the Southern Highlands was awarded with the “Arthur Lidgard Memorial” cup for the Best Junior Player.
Lucy Frizel received the “AML & F Trophy” for the Best Junior Club Member.
Best Presented Horse and Rider under 12 years (donated by Warwick Vynor) went to Natasha Reynolds.
Gilpin Award for Achievement went to Jeanett Hurst who put in a great effort all season.
The John F Byrne Trophy for most improved polocrosse pony was awarded to the Reynolds family for Elmwood Precedent who was ridden by Paul Spackman.
Jan Rutlidge who was a new-comer this year excelled herself with every game she was rewarded for this by receiving Most Improved Player of the Year.
Shelley Night and her mount Charlie Brown was the recipient of the Spackman Trophy for the Best Horse and Rider combination.
Anthony Yeo who was a standout player throughout the season scooped the pool by winning the Venour Nathan Club Day Cup for Best Horse as well as the Presidents Cup for the Best Performance Match Player.
The Edwards Trophy for the Best Match Womans Player went to the talented Kylie Gotham who represented in the NSW womans team as well as at the Sydney Olympics.
Mark Gee another rookie took out the “Alice Gilpin Trophy” for the player with the Best Club Spirit on and off the field. Mark had a great season travelling anywhere and everywhere, rain, hail, (snow) or shine.
The “Rubber Shield” for the Most Commendable club members went to the very deserving Steve and Audrey Stuart who are a great asset to our club and we are very lucky to have them as members.
And finally “A Bob Connolly Racquet” was presented in appreciation to Warren McWhirter who as well as Vic Dickson travel away every weekend, cart horses cook our breakfast, lunch etc. Goalwave as well as many other things to many to mention. Neither of them play polocrosse but they are both very dedicated to the sport and we are very thankful to have them around.
Hopefully the year 2001 season will be bigger and better with more players and an even stronger club on and off the field. Polocrosse is a great family sport, it is great to play and great to watch.
