OXLEY College was abuzz with referees’ whistles and fulltime sirens on Saturday as the school held its back to Oxley day that featured a full schedule of sport on the college grounds.
On the ovals outside were the rugby matches against arch-rival Chevalier and hockey against Barker College from Sydney, while inside the sports hall, netball took centre stage.
While Chevalier dominated the rugby (see story page 44), the honours were shared between the colleges in netball.
Oxley had a massive 61-26 win in the seniors, while intermediate A was won by Chevalier 47-22 and intermediate B and D were claimed by Oxley.
But Chevalier took both the junior A and B categories late in the morning to ensure the day would finish at three matches apiece.
In hockey, there was only one competition match and Oxley’s firsts went down to Barker 4-0. The junior As and Bs played an internal match as Barker do not field teams in the junior girls age group.
Firsts coach Peter Freeman said hockey was a popular sport at the college and the first grade team had performed well this year despite having only recorded one win.
Incidently the win came against foes Chevalier a few weeks ago.
“We have been playing good hockey but probably haven’t won as many games as we would have liked,” Freeman said.
“There are still two games left and if we win them we can still make the semi-finals.”
Freeman said captain Kate Allman was one of firsts’ best on Saturday, along with Belinda McNaught and Year 7 girl Zoe Binda who filled in in the top grade.
Oxley’s Junior A and B teams are undefeated and are both likely to finish in the top two of their divisions.
The season stops for the school holidays and resumes on the first week in August.
