Schoolboy wrestler claims vintage double

27 Feb, 2002 08:23 AM

Teenage wrestling sensation Hugo Dessens has claimed his second national title in as many years with a powerful display at the weekend's Australian Junior Wrestling Championships in Sydney.

Dessens fought back nerves and an injured ankle to reign supreme in the 85kg class and secure back to back Australian titles.

"I wasn't feeling the best with my ankle and I must admit iwas pretty nervous," he said.

"I knew I had to do well though so I just gave it my best."

Dessens advanced to the final with a clinical points victory over his Victorian opponent and found himself up against a fellow New South Welshman in the gold medal decider.

But Dessens was simply awesome, crushing his rival in a dominant first round defeat, eventually prevailing on technical superiority.

Fighting out of the Highlands Wrestling Club, Dessens was quick to thank his support team.

"It was very satisfying to know that I'd done my best but I couldn't have done it without the help of Reg and Geoff Marsh," he said.
