Robo gladiators wear down Mt Annan in thriller

29 May, 2002 08:33 AM

The Robertson Gladiators showed that they were the best pack in the competition by wearing down Mt Annan in a thrilling 26-10 win on Saturday at Robo Showground.

The Spuddies have dragged themselves out of their slump by notching up their second consecutive win in trying condition.

The wet weather did not deter the Robertson outfit who charged through Mt Annan's sloppy defence.

But it was youngster Doug Tilley that stole the show scoring his first ever try in grade football.

A happy coach Andrew Murdoch said his side was back on track.

"It's lifted the spirits of the players," he said.

"Now that we are back to our good form we just need to get back up the ladder on points.'

"Finally our positional play is where I want it to be."

Murdoch said it was a scrappy first half until his players realised short passes and playing tight would win them the game in wet weather.

"The win came down to the team who could best hold onto the ball," he said.

"We took them too easy last time and they beat us.

"This time our intensity was there and the players realised they can't just rock up and expect to win."

He said Grant Pointing, Scott Bone, Jamie Hanrahan, Brad Whatman and Mick McCabe were outstanding.

"They went right up the middle and defended well," he said.

A disappointed Mt Anna coach Nigel Drury said there were no excuses for his side's poor performance.

"We just didn't come out to play in the second half," he said.

"We had a few players out and some sustained injuries during the game so we ran out of bench.

"We will meet Robertson again and I'm sure we'll turn things around."

What the player thought:

"We played discipline football." Scott Bone.

"It was cold but we won and that's the main thing. There were a few dropped balls but we got the two points." Gerard Elliott.

"We have a really good pack of forwards so nobody will touch us." Russell Turner.

"We played alright in the second half after a shabby first half. We played better to the conditions and I'm happy with the way we finished." Grant Pointing.

"It's good to win two in a row. In the second half the forwards did well." Adam Ringholt.

"The second half's defence won it for us." Matthew Bell.

"In the second half we stuck to our game plan and showed discipline." Grant Hurford.

"The game was about holding the ball in wet weather." Gary Chetcuti.

"It was pretty scrappy in the first half but the forwards led the way in the second half and the backs finished it off." Jamie Hanrahan.

"It was wet and a little bit hard." Ben Hansen.

"We turned it on in the second half and blew them away." Luke Bendall.

"We are starting to show what we are capable of. We've won two in a row so we'll just keep going from there." Aaron de Jager.

"Up the middle is the only way to win wet weather football." Ben Sams.

"It was good to get a win but we still have a bit of work to do." Matthew Green.

"It was a good team effort and I'm glad to see we've found our form." Brad Whatman.

"It was a good to get another win under our belt." Doug Tilley.

"We improved in the second half and showed discipline. I put the win down to training by 'corgi' Murdoch." Mick McCabe.
