Records tumble in short races

29 Sep, 2008 04:35 PM
SEVERAL records were created in the short five-kilometre and 10-kilometre races at the Fitzroy Falls Fire Trail marathon on Saturday.

A new benchmark time occurred in the 5K race when 20-year-old North Rocks runner Michael Harrison clocked in at 16 minutes and 19 seconds, beating the previous record by five seconds, set by Ryan Gregson in 2006.

Not to be outdone, second-placed Lara Tamsett set a new ladies’ record with 17 minutes and 32 seconds – one minute and 24 seconds quicker than Alexis McKillop’s old mark. Tamsett also bettered her previous best by one minute and 42 seconds.

Exeter 15-year-old Henry Hobson was the Highlands’ best performer, with a time of 20 minutes and 51 seconds to secure seventh place.

In the 10km race, 23-year-old Wollongong runner Stephen Brown won with a time of 33 minutes and 58 seconds.

Brown’s time was under a minute slower than his time last year, but e still secured the third fastest time in the event.

Canberra pair Emily Brichacek and Scott Imhoff took out second and third place.
