Patris officially open field after eight-year wait

29 May, 2002 08:31 AM

After an eight-year wait, Patris United have finally opened its new field located on Centennial Road.

More than 200 people turned up to the event on Sunday with Sydney Olympic captain Peter Zorbas opening the pitch.

Zorbas said it was the first time he had been to an opening and hoped he could do more in the future.

"The Greek community should be proud of what they have achieved," he said.

Zorbas said his contract had run out at Sydney Olympic and he was in negotiations at the moment.

Patris club president Andrew Lamrock hailed the event a success saying that the project would not have got off the ground without the fantastic help of many people including the Highlands Greek community as well as the Wingecarribee Sport and Recreation Council.

"This is a true celebration for all the hard work of many people over the past eight years," he said.

"To finally have a dream turn into a reality few people would have never thought possible.

"It's a celebration for the beginning of a new era in the club's future.

"A true community project that has solid foundations for the youth and families in the Southern Highlands.

"A community project is something we all do from the heart."

Some of the events that took place included Greek dancing as well as a match between Patris and west Drummoyne Greek Community Club.

But it was the announcement of the club's strip sponsor Valley Spot Cafe at Moss Vale that was the highlight of the day.
