It might have looked like a mismatch when they ran out onto the field, but the overpowered Mittagong Panthers proved size doesn't matter by knocking over the Penguins 1-0 in the second grade women's match at Eridge Park on Saturday.
A gallant goal saving performance by Mittagong's Natalie Thomson just before half time proved to be the turning point in the match with her side hanging on.
A pleased Panthers coach Sharon Worner said her side performed well considering the playing conditions.
"The field was atrocious but we still hung on," she said.
"Karen Cross had a great game in the goal and if it wasn't for her the score could have been in Bowral's favour."
Worner said there were five under-12 players in the side, which was part of the club's initiative to start younger players in the senior competition.
"We put them up a level to let them learn but also it keeps the club strong," she said.
"It's a good boost to the side and it should spur them on.
"A win is a bonus but they are not here to win they are here to get the experience."
Bowral captain Kristen Allen echoed Worner's sentiments saying it was like playing on a 'cow paddock'.
"We haven't played as a team before so we are still getting to know each other and how we play," she said.
But it was the lack of players that Allen owed the loss to.
"Last week we were short as well that's why we are going to struggle in this competition," she said.
"We need players to turn up and it's frustrating when we don't get the numbers.
"We have a good side, it would be nice if we had all the team members present."
