Oxley back into battle

10 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM

OXLEY College resumed their participation in ISA basketball, softball and cricket competitions last week with over 120 students keen to get back on the court or out in the field.

Unfortunately for the cricket Firsts, the Central Coast Grammar School oval was under water so their excitement was short lived and the matched washed out.

The senior and junior softball teams were both welcomed by Chevalier College.

In the seniors match Oxley batted first and a strong start meant that Chevalier had to chase hard the whole match.

Alice Cant and Jemima Ind each made a home run and Grace Hawkins' pitching was excellent.

The catch of the day was made by Monica Kickert and the Oxley girls came away with a win 24-8.

The juniors also made some early home runs and played well as a team which secured their victory.

The final score was 6 - 1 and was a fine way to welcome their new coach Mrs Pugh .

It was a massive day of basketball at Oxley with all the boys and all but one of the girls teams playing at home.

The boys were up against teams from St Pius X College and there was a couple of nail biting games.

The Firsts were narrowly defeated 23 - 21. Though Oxley had the majority of possession, missed opportunities meant the game became close and then was lost. Coach Cunich has returned to the Firsts so momentum will increase heading into the finals.

The under-17s started strongly against their well drilled opponents.

It was basket for basket for the first five minutes before the early brilliance dimmed and St Pius pulled away, with the final score 50-23.

Will Sherbourne and Alex Pugh had very strong games for the under-14s and with the whole team working as a unit they won a very intense game 26 - 22.

The under-13s are improving every week under the guidance of Mr Bollom.

They were however, unable to break through the St Pius defence and went down 19 - 14.

The junior A girls lead 17 - 9 in the first half against St Spyridon College but St Spyridon pulled something special out of the bag and fired up in the second half to beat the Oxley girls 22 - 19.

Gabby Taylor-Helme and Louise Hannan never gave up and were the best on court for Oxley.

The junior B girls had a double header against St Spyridon College and finished the day with a 23-18 win and a 27 - 22 loss. Jaime Pryor top scored in the first game and Jamie Binder in the second.

Karina Allen and Sophia Downes defended tenaciously, Natasha Nagy and Robyn Frank rebounded strongly and Alexia drove to the basket with confidence.

A slow game for the Inter A saw St Spyridon in front by just one point at half-time.

They broke away in the second half despite the best efforts of Olivia Spring and Chrissy Frank with the final score 25 - 17. The Inter Bs started with a team of five for the first 13 minutes until two junior players stepped up and into the team.

It was always going to be tough but the girls never stopped with the eventual score 46 - 18.

The Fists travelled to Blue Mountains Grammar School for their first game back and controlled the game right from the first whistle.

Isabel Walsh was the standout with excellent rebounds and drives to the basket.

The girls were very happy with their 35 - 15 heading into the finals.
