Moss Vale’s best and fairest league players honoured

31 Oct, 2001 09:05 AM

At the annual presentation of the Moss Vale club it showed that this great club is far from dead.

There is still a great feeling that this mighty club will rise again and be a strong force to reckon with in the next couple of years.

In front of a packed auditorium MC for the night Greg Burke opened the night with a big welcome to all guests.

He also noted the presence of life members Bill and Mary Saunders, Tony Burke and Christine Sams along with the team sponsors Hotel Moss Vale first grade, Terry Loader Construction reserve grade and S and C L Haulage under-18.

With the turmoil that the club had early in the season one notable absentee was the first grade coach Legs, who must have had something over than football happening again but he was not going to upset this night.

The president of the club Mr Tony Burke was then welcomed to the microphone.

He outlined the season for the club and also welcomed every one present and wished all a great night and then it was on with the presentations.

In appreciation to the support to this club mementos were presented to Hotel Moss Vale and the Central Hotel who with out their support this club would struggle.

Also to a tireless worker although he was absent (heard he was back in training and didn’t want the players to see just how fit he is looking) Mark Knight who spends hours preparing the ground.

Also recognised was the tireless hours that the canteen women do at every home game.

It was great to see them also presented with flowers to also mark the respect and the work that these women also do.

Then it was to the players awards first up the under-18.

Best and fairest.

This was a three way tie.

Dean Cernovskis

Dean played mostly in the forwards and was a academy member and if he continues on in the game should go along way.

Rocky Stokes

Little Rock as known to all a player that is small but the football that he played during the season proved that it does not matter how small you are you can still mix it with the big guys.

Michael Robinson

A forward who lacked nothing this season and continued to be the one who always shoed the way forward

The Coaches Award:

Peter Robertson

Robbo another player how was out there to give his best and put in the effort week after week.

Encouragement awards

This award went to two very dedicated players

Chad Pemperton

Grinna was a player that always put in the effort whether he was on the bench or on the field at raining or playing.

Brendon Hore

First year in league and hopefully not his last a true work horse run all day and night.

Reserve Grade best and fairest:

Terry Fish

One of the old brigades, although he was noticed by the refs who thought he was getting tired and spent a bit of time in the bin.

Runner up

Matt Burke

Matt is another player that has been around for a few seasons but is not that old and a chip off the old mans block.

First Grade best and fairest:

John Cottrell

John who was a new player to the club showed that small in statue but big in heart and was respected by all that played along side him

Runner up

Peter McGuinness

What can be said about Pete, he has been around since Adam was a boy and still a player that opposing sides respect.

Perpetual Awards

Tony Burke Encouragement award

Scott Bishop

A under-18 player who was one of the reasons that side went so far although was a player that needed to start strapping a week before the game but has a big heart.

Oz Clarke Most improved

Cheyne Denning

Another under 18 player who did improve out of sight and will have a long way to in the game with this sort of commitment

Tony Williams Award for 110 percent effort

Craig Barton

This guy must be at least 50 years old been around along time with this club and was a huge winner of this award

Clubman of the year award

Tony Burke

It was a highlight of the night when Tony received this award to see him choked for words after receiving a standing ovation as he walked to centre stage.

Tony’s work for the club has been outstanding and with more people dedicated as much as he has been then this club would be the club.

This last presentation was lastly followed by the under-18 being presented with their jumpers and the night was followed by dancing drowning of sorrows and comradeship.

This alone only proves that the Moss Vale club will be the club in the not too distant future.
