Mittagong claim victory in hockey epic

23 Sep, 2003 08:57 AM
Bowral players and supporters were left heartbroken as Mittagong snatched victory in an epic two and a half hour encounter to snare the double in the Southern Highlands first grade hockey grand finals on Saturday.

The men's decider between the Blues and the Lions - which followed the Mittagong women's 2-0 triumph over Robertson - was locked one-all at the end of normal time and it took another 74 minutes of action before Ben Garard finally brought the match to its conclusion.

Ironically Garard's goal came in the last minute of what captains Ron Allen and Glen Isedale had agreed would be the final phase of play.

It had been announced over the loudspeaker that Bowral and Mittagong would be declared joint premiers if neither scored in the 10 minute period.

Both Allen and Isedale - who each have more than 20 years' first grade experience - could not remember a match lasting as long.

"It was a great game, one of the best grand finals," said an exhausted Allen.

"Our guys played well, it was a really gutsy effort, but I'm just glad it's over to be honest."

Isedale, just as tired but wearing a winner's grin, agreed: "It seemed like an eternity."

Wade Bedson scored the opening goal to give the Blues the lead seven minutes into the game and they had the better of the play for much of the first half.

Mittagong began the second stanza with renewed vigor however and it was not long before the Lions started to dominate, with the equaliser from Steve Curcuruto coming just seven minutes after the restart.

After no more goals were added before fulltime, both teams squandered chances in extra time and tempers flared in a moment of high drama that led to a player from each team being spoken to by the umpire.

Though there were periods when play simply drifted from end to end with no real excitement, each side's determination remained evident as they continued to strive for the winner until eventually the final period was proclaimed.

"We certainly showed a bit of ticker," said Isedale.

"We had a bad first half but to Bowral's credit they played well and blocked us out.

"We came back well in the second half though we probably should have added a couple more goals.

"Obviously everyone tired as the game went on, but we hung in there and never stopped giving it our all."
