Mettle tested as McGill snatches podium spot

30 Sep, 2002 08:26 AM

Willow Vale race ace Aaron McGill has relaunched his flagging career by snaring a podium spot in the just completed Gt Production Car series.

The Celica driver steered his way to third spot in the popular class despite a year plagued by mechanical problems and other on track tribulations.

Selected as the second string driver for Colin Osborne's Celica team, McGill stunned race fans by leading the B production class after the opening two rounds.

But the in-car gremlins stalled his title charge with the Bathurst veteran virtually black flagged in four of the remaining six championship rounds.

"It was certainly a bittersweet year and I suppose you could call it character building," he said.

The 39-year-old's promising career was nearly cut short last August when he suffered a horrifying crash in a V8 Supercar event at Lakeside.

McGill careered into a concrete barrier at 150km/ph with the impact causing a host of painful injuries including a dislodged brain.

The likeable veteran concedes the crash has left permanent scars and admits he has all but written off his dream of super stardom.

"I've given up on that dream of climbing the dizzying heights," he said.

"You really do need a million dollars and I'm sick of making 40 phone calls a day."

But McGill will nevertheless target a spot in the elite performance car championships for next season.

The GT production car series has proved a smash hit with motor racing buffs with vehicles only allowed to modify springs, shocks, exhausts and the engine management system.

"The fans do really like t because they can relate to the cars," McGill said.

"They're able to check out a Celica up against a Holden Astra and match ups like that."
