Local sport blown away by wild winds

30 Jul, 2001 10:27 AM

The weekend’s wild weather wreaked havoc with local sport as the howling winds and driving rain kept people indoors.

A mid-week deluge meant that all council grounds were closed, forcing cancellation of soccer, rugby league, AFL, hockey and rugby union matches.

Highlands United soccer was due to play in Nowra but its match was also postponed while Bowral Blacks and Moss Vale first grade league managed to contest away matches.

Local golf courses were hit particularly hard, with player numbers across the board down by more than a half.

Highlands netball managed to squeeze a number of Saturday morning games in but lack of players meant that some games were forfeited.

The Illawarra Soccer Association also cancelled all of its fixtures drawing criticism from some corners of the Highlands Eagles who claim the lost match could cost the U16s the minor premiership.

Moss Vale greyhounds were one of the few sports that managed to survive, conducting its usual 20 race program unaffected.
