Junior grand finals go down to the wire

25 Mar, 2002 08:54 AM

The Highlands junior cricket season finished up in thrilling style on the weekend with three enthralling title deciders.

In an extraordinary day of cricket on Saturday, two of the matches went right down to the wire with the under-12s between Moss Vale Rangers and Blues 1 finishing in a tie.

In the under-14s, Chevalier held off a spirited Robertson side while in the 16s Mittagong kept its unbeaten record in tact by brushing aside a brave Chev outfit.

Mittagong's Scott Miller emerged as the hero in the 16s, backing up a tidy bowling performance with an unbeaten 65 as his team notched up 9/259 to cruise to a 144 run victory.

Winning coach James Kemsley was delighted with his side's effort claiming they had saved the best for last.

"That was without doubt the best all-round batting and bowling performance of the year," he said.

"Chev are a quality side but we just well and truly lifted for the match.

"This is very special for the guys and some people play a whole cricketing career without winning a grand final."

The win gives Mittagong back to back titles in the under-16s competition.

Best players for the premiers were Scott Miller, Simon Reinhard, Tim Martin and captain Jeremy Donaldson.

In the under-14s at Lackey Park, Chevalier defended a strong first day total against Robertson to finish the season as undefeated premiers.

But the plucky Robo side did themselves proud, giving away size and age to their rivals, the underdogs stuck to their guns and nearly pulled off a stunning upset.

Chev smashed 7/229 in its first innings courtesy of strong batting by Adrian Pagano, 44, Luke Bertram, 37, James Roberts, 48no, and William Mulvaney, 33.

In reply Robertson looked in trouble after opener Alby Rule went for 50 but a cavalier cameo by Ben "Gilly" Wright, 48, gave Robo a sniff until the Chev bowlers lifted their intensity to finish off Robo's defiant tail end.

A brilliant direct hit run out by Tim Howe was the highlight of a solid Chevalier fielding performance.

Adrian Pagano was awarded man of the match for Chev after taking a classy 5/23 on top of a stellar batting performance.

Chevalier's victory proved they were the dominant under-14s side but special mention must go to Robertson coach Rod Watling who actually cut short an interstate holiday to be with his side.

In an amazing under-12s decider, Bowral Blues 1 and the Moss Vale Rangers played out a thrilling tie.

Both teams were crowned joint premiers following the tie.
