A team of Highlands golfers are about to live every weekend hackers dream after qualifying for next month's Holden Scramble final on the Gold Coast.
The Highlands golf club members, along with club pro Dave Bennett, will jet off bound for golfers paradise in late November following their narrow victory in the regional finals at the Federal course in Canberra last week.
Brothers Scott and Dean Webb along with Brett Ryland and Bennett scorched around the testing Federal course in 63 (-10) to stave off their nearest rivals by just three quarters of a shot.
And the old adage of drive for show and putt for dough rung true for the team as the blades ran hot, including one memorable 70 foot putt for birdie on the fifth.
"I've always said that the Holden Scramble is a putting comp and this proved it," Bennett said.
"It was just one of those incredible days where we seemed to hole everything."
Scenes of jubilation followed the team's victory and they will now take their place along with 31 other teams over three rounds at the Royal Pines course.
The all-expenses paid trip marks the fourth time Bennett has made the trek but the likeable pro admits that it's this team that has him confident of chalking up his maiden win.
"This is such a well-balanced team and I honestly think we can win it," he said.
"But the beauty of the whole thing is that we've already won the prize just going up there.
"To do well will just be a bonus."
The scramble is played in an ambrose format with all four players hitting a shot and then choosing the best one to play the next shot from- effectively giving teams four chances at any particular shot.
"I think this event is so popular because team events are pretty rare in golf and everyone loves playing ambrose," Bennett said.
"The lure of getting to the national final is also strong and it's what everyone strives for."
Legendary in local golfing circles for his celebratory flair, Bennett admits that a victory on the Gold Coast would equate to a serious party.
