Highlands hockey vets dazzle rivals at state championships

31 Jul, 2002 09:21 AM

The district's indestructible hockey vets have once again turned back the clock to dazzle the opposition at last weekend's NSW Veterans Championships in Wagga.

The Highlands division four crew led the charge for the locals, snaring a surprise victory in their pool against some spirited opposition.

Missing a swag of leading players from last year, the golden girls gave it to their rivals, eventually winning the final 2-0 against the well-fancied Cowra squad.

"Cowra beat us earlier that morning so we went into the final thinking it would be really hard," captain Lesley Daley said.

"So we were a bit surprised and it was our best game of the tournament.

"The sideline help made us lift 100 per cent and after the second goal we knew we had it won."

The Merv Wortz coached team had lost eight players from last year and had four new 35 year old vets in the line up.

After an opening 1-0 defeat of Orange, the Highlands side crushed Bathurst 4-0 with right inner Anne Barcicki snatching a double.

A Di Wulff goal gave the side a narrow 1-0 win over Canterbury and they suffered their first defeat and only goal conceded in the next match with the physical Cowra side.

The Highlands capped off their round games with a comfortable 2-0 win over North Shore setting up a rematch with Cowra.

A first half goal to left inner Gwenda Stephenson gave the Highlands the early ascendancy and a scrappy second half winner to Karen Algie sealed a memorable victory in the half state event.

"Cowra came out a bit cocky and we put it over them," winning coach Merv Wortz said.

"They were so intense at half time and really talking it up.

"This side just clicked so well right from our opening trial at Campbelltown and to go in with such a new team and win against bigger associations is great.

"It was just good to be a part of the squad."

Wortz is becoming somewhat of a coaching guru with the weekend's win becoming his third state or half-state title as coach.

Best players in a strong all round team performance for the Highlands were defender Amanda Wilson, centre half Maureen Thomas and right half Karen Bisby.

The Highlands division three team grabbed second place at the tournament while our division five side finished a creditable fourth.
