Last week saw the Southern Highlands Cycling Club run the Bowral Cup Track Carnival at the Olympic Velodrome at Bankstown.
The carnival was made up of an afternoon junior carnival for riders aged 10 to 16 years, then two state championships, being the open men points race, and the junior men points race for riders 17 or 18 in 2005.
Then an evening carnival including handicap, elimination, and scratch racing, great entries were received with almost 140 riders racing including some visits from New Caledonia and New Zealand.
The Highlands were represented by a record nine riders for a track open, including Josh and Caleb Ewan, Alex and Justin Tomlinson, Don Talintyre, Lynne Vaughan, Peter Wheeler, Chad Balding, and Richard Vollebregt all competing in various events during the day.
NSWIS/Dubbo rider Chris Pascoe dominated the NSW 40km points race championship recording a good win on 46 points from the 16 sprints.
Second place went down to the wire, with a race-long battle between world and Olympic team pursuit champion Stephen Wooldridge and NSWIS/St George rider Stephen Fitzpatrick, which finally saw Wooldridge second on 28 points with Fitzpatrick third on 26 points. Richard Vollebregt competed strongly as usual for a creditable ninth on six points.
In a quick race that saw just nine finishers from the 17 starters, Phil Stokes from Penrith Panthers was fourth on 23 points.
The under-19 men's points race over 25 km was also a quick race with nine finishers from the 16 starters, with NSWIS/Eurobodalla rider Mitchell Pearson winning narrowly on 18 points from NSWIS/S'th cross rider Tyler McLachlan (17 points).
Justin Tomlinson finished a very creditable sixth on seven points which is great for a rider who is still only 16 years old.
