Gutsy seconds keep perfect record alive

29 Apr, 2002 08:12 AM

Spectators were left gob smacked when the Bowral Blacks seconds notched up their third consecutive win against Campbelltown on Saturday at Eridge Park.

The hex of last year seems to have finally lifted with the new look side cementing top position on the competition's ladder with a 20-18 win over their northern counterparts.

In a pressure cooker game, seconds'coach Will Collett said the 'gut' in their game eventually came through.

Despite the win, Collett said poor goal kicking skills let down the side.

"Games are won by goal kicks and that is what's letting us down," he said.

"It's the goal kickers responsibility to practice weekly, so if we kicked more conversions we could have won more convincingly."

Collett said a broken week of training did not help matters with players not prepared for the tough encounter.

"Anzac Day commitments disrupted training which could have hindered their performance," he said.

"But it was a gutsy determined win."

Campbelltown coach Peter Mott said simple executions was what cost his side a win against Bowral.

"We grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. We were our own worst enemy," he said.

"We knew Bowral wouldn't be easy as they are undefeated in seconds and firsts.

"They are definitely a side who will be in the top five later on in the competition.

"And that is due to the depth that is obviously in the club this year."

Mott also owed the loss to his side's ‘shocking' preparation during the week and the loss of two players to other commitments.

"We still have plenty of work to do if we want to be competitive," he said.

Bowral 20 (Daniel Marmont, Tony Woodham, Andrew Tyson, Peter Hotten) d Campbelltown 18 (Jamie Gillies, Pito Kasino; Mark Iosefa conv, penalty).

Best and fairest: 3. John Ewing, 2. Tony Woodham, 1. Rupert Handyside.
