BURRADOO polocrosse player Alison Mathie will finally get to play for Australia against the world’s best nations, at the International Polocrosse Quadrangular Tournament being held at Bong Bong in April.
Mathie, 26, was named in the 10-woman Australian squad for the 2007 World Cup, but her hopes of representing her country were dashed when the squad was reduced to the final four.
The Berrima resident watched Australia win the World Cup and resolved to force her way into the top side, undergoing a heavy fitness regime of boxing, running and gym training, while also working as a gardener.
Her hard work was rewarded with selection in the national side following her performance at the national championships in Western Australia late last year.
“In some ways it makes up for being cut from the squad, I have just had to put more work in, worked on horses a lot more, just get a lot more experience so I could become a better player,” Mathie said.
“Representing Australia has always been a goal of mine, probably since I was about 16.”
Mathie is part of an eight member Australia team made up of four men and four women from across the country.
