Good turn of pace sees Margret just beat Rita

26 Apr, 2002 08:20 AM

This week's racing took the riders to the Alpine course north of Mittagong, which is one of the hardest course along Wombeyan Caves.

With fine weather once gain, race numbers were up again, with 39 riders taking part.

The race was a HCP race with riders leaving in order of fitness and ability, with several visiting riders being the hardest to judge. First to leave was Margret Cady and Leo Vollebregt two of the most senior riders showing some of the younger riders are never to old to enjoy cycling.

On four minutes: L Gorrell ,I Mein; 5 minutes, J Lescelles, R Mein, K Wild; 1O minutes, J Tomlinson,K Brown,D Feeney,R Hesford; 13minutes, E Jessen ,S Beamont ,P Deitz; 15 minutes, N Butcher,D Morris,B Hesford; 17 minutes, C Lepherd ,L Vaughan ,J Hesford ,G Todd; 19 minutes, G Cady ,M Cady, A Derks, T Clifford, A Forbes, P Wheeler; 21 minutes, M Feeney,S Jackson ,C Balk, P Hume, 23 minutes, J Williamson, J Starr, B Gasson, G Walsh and last to leave was R Vollebregt, S Lewis ,C Balding on 25 minutes.

They would have to ride extremely hard to catch the limit riders,on the 39km course.

With the first eight kilometres of the course on a constant downhill flow most riders would not make up much time on the groups in front of them. Once at the first turn of the race began to take shape, Margret at 65 gave Leo 71 years the slip and looked good to stay away. As the riders approached the first major climb of Cathrine Hill some groups who looked Good on paper were to blow each other apart, in particular the l9 minute group. With the father son combination George and Mick Cady tightening the screws and dropping several riders . Also Colin struggled with an illness commonly called love. James Williamson also doing what the Cady's did to their group, with James having a good long look at the bottom of Cathrines, seeing the SCR group closing fast he was determine to make the top before he was caught.

By the bottom of Cathrines Hill the scratch riders were yet to catch anyone but with riders now in sight it was enough motivation for Richard and Shaun to up the tempo, pegging back seven riders in the space of lkm. At the second turn around Margret still held the advantage over Leo with Rita on the comeback from injury showing that she still had it. With these three holding a commanding lead the position was only thing to decide. At the last turn the scratch Riders were closing on a large pack made up of the l9min 17min and 15min groups.

Now caught they continued on their way, with along flat section before they climbed to the finish it was good to see Gary Todd come to the front to lend a hand with some good turns of pace.

Once the scratch group reached the old HWY they had managed to drop all but James, showing a great determination and ability to mix it with the best.

At the finish Margret had shown a good turn of pace to take first place leading from start to finish. Rita crossing ahead of Leo to take second Leo third while Ejnar and Peter were caught 400m short of the finish with James leading out the sprint, showing the HCPer he still had some petrol in the tank but, with birthday boy Shaun in a hurry to get to his party he passed to take fourth, Richard Vollebregt fifth, James sixth, Chad seventh, Ejoar eighth, Peter ninth, Mick Cady lOth

Next weeks will be at Canyonleigh 2:00pm. Marshalls T Petrie, D Morris, C Balk.

Also good luck to the members racing at Canberra's two-day tour. If you are interested in riding please call Richard Vollebregt on 0411747830.
