A CRISP and foggy morning greeted 35 riders and over two dozen spectators for The Sydney Hunt Club’s opening run of the season last weekend.
In its 199th year, the historic club is focused on hunting at the courtesy of selected property owners within the Southern Highlands.
The riders looked resplendent in black riding jackets and red coats for those that have earned them.
The morning started traditionally, with a tot of warm mulled wine known as the “Stirrup Cup”.
Following an address from the club president and with the pack of hounds sniffing the ground, all those present knew that it was almost time to be off.
As if by magic the fog lifted to be greeted by the strains of a lone bagpipe player that led the field of hunters to the first boundary fence in an age old tradition for this club.
Next they were off with the whips scouting the flanks and the huntsman commanding his pack with a series of notes from his hunting horn.
For those in the field the weather was magnificent, if perhaps a trifle warm, lifting the scent from the ground a little too quickly for the hounds liking.
