End of a great league club

26 Oct, 2004 02:52 PM
An era has come to an end, with the decision being made to close the Senior Bowral Rugby League Football Club.

It's a devastating loss for the club, which has been operating since 1910.

According to life member of the Bowral Rugby League Michael Hyland, the senior side has folded due to a lack of support.

"Due to the lack of interest in the senior side, the members at the annual general meeting decided to close this once great club," Hyland said.

"Reasons vary, but player numbers, increases in running costs and insurance have all been contributing factors."

The Club hasn't fielded a team in Group 6 for the last two years and only seven people turned up to the club's annual general meeting.

"While theoretically possible that the Senior Bowral Rugby League Football Club could be saved, I doubt it very much," Hyland said.

"As far as I'm concerned it spells the end of senior Bowral rugby league."

Hyland says that the writing had been on the wall for the senior club for some time.

"We'd seen it coming for a while. We tried joining with other clubs but it didn't work out," Hyland said.

"I don't want to preach to the other clubs, but they have got to amalgamate to be able to compete at the top level."

The Senior Bowral Rugby League Football Club has been playing at Loseby Park since 1927.

The double storey clubhouse at Loseby Park, which was built in 1976, was named after the late Bowral rugby league great Jim "Doc" McClean.

"In the past, the lights at Loseby Park have been covered by the club and, with the closure of the club our responsibility will end," Hyland said.

"In future, any group wishing to use the lights will have to contact council."
