The Moss Vale Dragons endured a crushing loss to the Picton Magpies, losing 76-22 in their second last match of the season on Sunday.
The Magpies swooped in on the Dragons right from the blow of the whistle, racing away to a 16-0 lead after only eight minutes of play as the Dragons' defence struggled to protect their territory.
At half time the Magpies were racing along with a 36-6 lead before Moss Vale tried to get themselves back in the game with three impressive tries from Andrew Coulter.
However, the Magpies continued their scoring rampage throughout the second half, scoring seven tries in the second half for a total of 14 tries in the match.
Dragons George Ghazal and Brett Harris both contributed to the total with a try each, and Don Cochrane helped to boost the total by converting a goal, but it wasn't enough to stop the Magpie mow-down.
The heavy loss was a big disappointment for Dragons coach Matt Burke, who fears his team may have experienced some end-of-season mental fatigue in the match.
"We just went through the motions and that's not what you should be doing in first grade football," he said.
"The mental approach to the games is not what it should be...the boys have started to relax now that the season's nearly over and they're not putting in the effort to win games.
"In the second half we did play some football...(but) we should have definitely performed better than that.
"Our defence was very ordinary and just the lack of enthusiasm for the game was the biggest concern."
Burke was concerned the team's apparent mental fatigue may have developed as the team tried to meet the demands and rigours of first-grade football after a few years' break from the competition.
"It's been a tough year for the boys returning to first grade this year, and I think it may be taking its toll," Burke admitted.
