Moss Vale rugby league has been handed a surprise semi final sweetener with last Wednesday's shock offer by council to repair the Dragons' decaying clubhouse.
The partially completed Community Oval building was buffeted by fierce winds last September prompting council to earmark $80,000 from its multi million dollar capital expenditure budget to finally complete the 'work in progress'.
"The club has been struggling over the years and it became obvious to us that they didn't have the resources to finish the job," Mayor Phil Yeo said.
"It's a bit of an eyesore at the moment and we want to get a roof on and get it to the lock up stage as soon as we can.
"The building is extremely vulnerable as it is and we'd like to complete the project before the windy season."
Dragons' secretary Tony Mitchell said the club was elated with the decision and acknowledged the crumbling top floor posed a genuine safety concern.
"We're very happy about the decision because realistically it could blow over and kill someone," he said.
"It is something that will benefit the whole community because there isn't really a hall in Moss Vale for people to hire."
The club will be responsible for fitting out the inside of the building once the external work is completed.
The decision to revamp the council-owned building comes at the same time the club's top side has qualified for the semi-finals in a decade.
Moss Vale play in the Group 6 second division competition and have finished in the crucial fourth and final playoff spot after a close call in the weekend's round of matches.
The Dragons looked at prohibitive odds to make the finals after drawing wooden spooners Bowral in the home clash but a spirited Kookaburras gave it to the title hopefuls, running in six unanswered second half tries to snatch victory 34-28.
This left the door open for the Mittagong Lions to score a shock upset against minor premiers Mt Annan but the young Lions narrowly went down 35-26.
But despite scraping into the finals, the Dragons will need to show much greater commitment when they meet the in-form Robertson Spuddies at Community Oval next Sunday.
