Danny closes in on Paralympic dream

Danny closes in on Paralympic dream

28 Aug, 2002 08:13 AM

Bundy superfish Danny Rumsey has pulled another trick from his swimming cap by bagging double gold in last Saturday's Sports Council state championships at Homebush.

The 13-year-old, who has Down's Syndrome, stunned observers by powering into first place in his very first competitive attempt at the 200 metres medley.

Fighting back the effects of a nasty cold, Rumsey also won gold and smashed his PB in the 200 metres breastroke and scored silver in the 50 metre free, 50 metre butterfly and 100 metre breastroke.

A fierce competitor with a flair for the dramatic, Rumsey has become a crowd favourite in his cameo appearances at the Sydney Aquatic Centre.

"He salutes the crowd and carries on when he wins, it's just wonderful," long time coach Glenda McRae said.

"He just loves to win but if he loses he gets a bit cranky and starts punching the water."

Rumsey's long term goal remains the 2008 Paralympics and McRae remains confident her star pupil has got the right stuff to represent Australia.
