Classy Emmett crushes rivals

30 Aug, 2002 07:50 AM

Colo Vale hit man Emmett Gazzard has floored a top field of boxers to claim the weekend's Southern District Championships in Richmond.

Fighting above his weight in the 57kg class, Gazzard breezed through the final to claim gold and was also crowned senior fighter of the tournament.

Gazzard will now aim up for October's state titles before climbing into the ring for a big international event in Canberra in January.

"This was a great warm up tournament and I'm really happy with how I went," Gazzard said.

"It's good to see that the aggression is still there."

Gazzard narrowly missed out on a spot in the Aussie team for last month's Commonwealth Games and could only look on as the man that snatched the under-54kg spot, Justin Kane, grabbed the gold medal.

"I must admit it was a bit hard but it's still good to see an Australian win a boxing gold," he said.

"He also set a good benchmark, it made me realise that if he could do it then so could I."

Gazzard is ranked the third best senior boxer in the nation despite only joining the senior ranks last month.

Sunday's Southern District titles provided the ideal hit out for the 18 year old, with leading boxers from three states strapping on the gloves for the tournament.

Gazzard fights out of the respected Jim Maloney stable at Bowral Boxing Club.
