Chev girls on high after Blue Mountains triumph

26 Jun, 2002 08:41 AM

The Chevalier thirds netball team scored a very composed win over Blue Mountains Grammar seconds last Saturday to keep their competition hopes alive.

The Chevalier girls

put aside a couple of

disappointing performances in their last games to make every post a winner.

From the opening centre it was obvious that the Chevalier girls were focused on playing to their true potential. The passing was crisp and was met by safe hands as Chevalier raced away to a 9-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Chevalier defence, Liz Blundel, Sam Cooper and Amy Walsh, was outstanding, applying pressure on the Blue Mountains attack that had them searching for new options.

The unforced errors that had plagued the Chevalier game in their last two outings were gone, with the leads making it into the circle, for Kate Mulligan and Kelly Stein to convert into points.

The half time score was a comfortable 14-5, but the Blue Mountains Grammar side, is renowned for their strong finish.

"I reminded the girls of this and the importance of keeping their composure, particularly when things started to get a little heated," said co-coach David Chandler.

The Chevalier team showed real spirit when Blue Mountains came at them in the second half, with a renewed vigor, which saw them score several goals in a row and look like they may over run the Chevalier side.

The Chevalier centre court players, Amanda Cervanaro, Katelyn Vanos, and Natalie Edwards, stood up and took control of the game back in to their hands, which halted the slide and frustrated the Blue Mountains attack.

Scoring off their own centre was vital and the girls managed to do this at critical stages.

Blue Mountains briefly came within two goals of Chevalier and it was the ability to keep it together under this pressure that won them the game.

"I was really proud of the girls efforts today, we've always known that this is the way they can play, it's just been getting them to put it together for a whole game.

They are a very capable side and some of their more fancied opponents are in for tough games next round. I think we over came more than one mountain today," enthused Mr Chandler.
