It was while watching his father and uncles in the ring nearly 50 years ago that a youthful Jim Maloney's love of boxing was born.
After enjoying a successful amateur career, the unassuming Maloney has quickly gained the reputation as a mentor to young pugilists throughout the Highlands.
As head of the Bowral Boxing Club, Maloney has carried on the tradition of his father Al and is now in his 20th year of tutoring up and coming boxers.
With star recruit and dual national champion Emmett Gazzard spearheading the stable of talented fighters, the club boasts an impressive record with young boxers.
And despite the current furore engulfing the sport, Maloney is adamant that boxing is still an ideal platform for character building.
"It's just incredible to see these kids confidence build when they learn a disciplined sport like boxing," he said.
"It gives them a reason to look after themselves and steer clear of bad influences.
"People have the impression that they are little bullies but in fact most of them are on the smallish side and start off with very low self-esteem.
"This is really the only sport where kids can compete on the basis of age, weight and ability."
Watching Maloney in the ring with his charges, it's obvious that he has a passion and rare talent for what he does.
"It's very satisfying personally to watch the transformation of these kids," he said.
"There is a real misconception that it is a rough sport but amateur boxing is so different from professional boxing.
"I've never seen a serious injury during my 40 years involvement with amateur boxing."
And as a successful businessman, Maloney provides an excellent role model for his students.
"I could never have done what I have in business without boxing," he said.
"The strength and the mental toughness you gain helps you in so many areas.
"It's a sport that attracts people from all different walks of life."
The boxing club is preparing to showcase some of its talent at its annual tournament set down for July 7 at Mittagong RSL.
"It's always a terrific night with a big crowd on hand," Maloney said.
"People can expect to see some good, promising young boxers."
