Bowral falls short

28 Feb, 2005 09:14 AM
Bowral United have fallen short in their bid to regain their Southern Lands first grade cricket premiership when they lost their match against Railway by just two runs over the weekend in Goulburn.

Railway's season looked all but over when they slumped to 5/31 on the first day's play at Seiffert Oval.

It was a good result for Bowral, who were missing strike bowlers Glen Thompson and Paul Davidson.

However, the Goulburn side rallied to finish their innings at 118.

Scott Spence was the destroyer for Bowral with 5/43 from 18 overs including the dangerous Jason Apps for a duck.

He was well supported by Tim Neven, who took 3/31 off eight overs.

Bowral didn't start the run chase in the best fashion either, and at one stage were 4/26.

Dean Roxburgh and Aaron Fox then combined and looked certain to guide Bowral to an easy victory, with the two putting on 70 for the fifth wicket before Fox was caught behind off Brad Miller's bowling.

From there, the Bowral innings fell apart, with five batsmen failing to score, and three others who failed to reach five.

Roxburgh top scored for United on 36, with Fox on 32 and Duncan Macpherson on 17.

At 8/109, needing just nine runs to pass the Railway first innings total, Bowral still seemed to be in control, however the last two wickets fell for seven runs

Railway went back into bat yesterday, only needing to bat out the day to move into the finals.

John Woodman, with an injured quad muscle, secured the points for Railway with a gutsy 86.

Railway finished the day at 5/195.

For Bowral, Spence, Neven and Roxburgh took one wicket each while Macpherson took two.

The win to Railway means that Goulburn will be represented by all three teams in this year's finals, with Moss Vale the only representative from the Highlands.
