 Bowral Cup a success

Bowral Cup a success

25 Feb, 2004 10:14 AM
The eighth edition of the Southern Highlands Cycling Club's premier event, the Bowral Cup Track Carnival in Sydney on Saturday night proved to be the most successful so far.

There were a number of reasons for the success of the carnival, most notably the fact that more than 120 of NSW's best cyclist's started with two State titles were on the line.

A number of Southern Highlands riders also recorded good results while local businesses contributed some wonderful prizemoney, and last but certainly not the least we had the wonderful facility that is the Olympic venue, Dunc Gray Velodrome.

In the major race the Konica Bowral Cup over 2000 metres (eight laps of Dunc Gray's boards), the winner was the current multiple World Junior medallist Chris Pascoe (NSWIS/Dubbo).

Shaun Hopkins from the Marconi CC was second with St George's Warren Scott in third place.

In the Women's Wheelrace the winner was Eve Hood (Parramatta CC).

In other highlights the XS Energy drink lightning handicaps finals were won by State representatives Peter Fitzpatrick (St George CC) in the men's and in the women's by Rebecca Ellis (Parramatta CC).

The 40km Cycling NSW Men's Points Race was won by Chris Sutton, son of former World Champion in this race Gary Sutton of the St George Cycling Club, while the 20km under-19 Women's Points race was won by Skye-Lee Armstrong from Parramatta Cycling Club.

The local club was well represented by our two best track cyclist's Richard Vollebregt and Justin Tomlinson.

Richard competed strongly with third placings in the Masters Men Elimination Race, Scratch Race, and the consolation race for non-qualifiers in the Handicap.

Justin rode strongly and smartly in the highly competitive under-17 men's division with a good third placing in the 5km scratch race, and two very narrow fourths in the under-17 Handicap and Derby series.

Alex Tomlinson (under-15 men) and Steve Jackson (Masters Men) also performed at their best in illustrious company.

Finally thanks again to the carnival's many sponsors, especially Konica, Minolta, Legend Cycles, XS Energy Drinks, Phantom Cycles, Wheeler Motors, NRMA and Mick Cady Air-conditioning.
