Blacks face tough test against handy Harlies

26 Apr, 2002 08:19 AM

The in-form Bowral Blacks will face their sternest test of the season tomorrow when they tackle defending premiers Campbelltown at Eridge Park.

Blacks supporters are hoping a mid week flying visit by Wallabies coach Eddie Jones will inspire Bowral to a third consecutive victory in the Illawarra Rugby competition.

But the revved up Harlequins will be desperate for points after a last game loss to the Tech Tahs and Blacks co-coach Craig Clothier claimed his side would need to steel itself for an onslaught from Campbelltown's fearsome forwards.

"They'll be pretty dirty and they have a mobile and aggressive forward pack," he said.

"They were far and away the best side last season and we'll have to be right up in their faces.

"We need to be aggressive in the breakdown and stick to our game plan."

A bumper crowd is expected for the match and Clothier remained confident that the Blacks were in the right form to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

"I think we're playing a good brand of rugby with most of our tries coming from the outside backs," he said.

"The guys seem to be really enjoying it and they seem to have that enthusiasm."

An injury cloud still hangs over fly half Daniel Drewe but Clothier believes the secret to the Blacks early season success is the side's untapped depth.

"The numbers have a lot to do with it and everyone knows that if they don't perform another bloke will step up," he said.

"In previous seasons there hasn't been that pressure to perform."

And club officials were flushed with pride after rugby guru Eddie Jones did a midweek check up of the Blacks.

"It's great for the club because Eddie really is on the cutting edge," Clothier said.

"He was pleased with what we were doing and it was positive reinforcement for the coaching staff."

In other Blacks' news, flying winger Trent Rengger has been named in the Southern Provincial rep team to play Victoria as a curtain raiser to the Brumbies versus Auckland clash on May 10 at Canberra Stadium.

Bowral Blacks: Liam Vaughan, Bob Payne, Willie Kombo, Mick Krebs, Josh Thomas, Troy Ingrey (c), David Cooke, James Galbraith, Damien Tyson, Daniel Drewe, Ben de Wit, Nick Tyson, Andrew Glenn, Trent Rengger, Nick Wansey.
