Birth of a champion: SonglineChr(39)s newborn filly

29 Nov, 2000 08:42 AM

With all the fanfare of a royal birth, a bouncing baby sister to Sunline stumbled into the world in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

In the sport of kings, breeding wears the crown and Inverness Stud in Bowral can lay claim to the world’s most awaited thoroughbred arrival.

And for good reason, the filly is sired by the world’s leading sire Danehill out of a mother to the best mare on the planet, Sunline.

“This is the most awaited birth since Prince William,” Inverness Stud manager Ross Bone said.

“Media from all over the world have been hounding us and I would say she’s Australia’s most valuable foal.”

So valuable in fact, that she has an estimated worth of $2 million even at such an early stage.

But the big moment was not without its anxiety for Bone as the bundle of joy arrived two weeks late.

“We were a bit worried that something might have gone wrong,” he said.

“But the mare is notoriously late and when she finally came it was a feeling of relief more than anything.

“The owners are very happy and we’ve been celebrating ever since.”

Despite foaling numerous top quality horses including Golden Slipper winner Merlene, Bone claimed the most recent addition was the highlight of his career.

“You always dream of breeding a horse like this and this is what it’s all about,” he said.

“This is a passion, for us the money is really nothing.

“There’s an old adage in breeding that says you can never go wrong breeding the best with the best, well they don’t come any better than Songline.”

For Bone and his dedicated staff at Inverness, the headlines they are receiving now are the culmination of many years’ hard work.

“This is just a huge boost for the stud and will really put us on the map,” he said.

“The big studs get all the recognition in this country and it’s very satisfying to finally receive some.”

And if ability on the racetrack counts for anything then this filly has truly regal blood coursing through her veins.

Older half-sister Sunline was recently voted the best mare in the world on turf and has since won a resounding second consecutive Cox Plate.

“Sunline is just an out and out champion,” Bone said.

“She’s even got her own webpage.”

Her father Danehill is arguably the world’s leading sire whose far-reaching influence has redefined the bloodstock landscape in Australia and led to an influx of European bloodlines locally.

With such majestic credentials, there’s every chance that this tiny filly will grow into another Highlands bred champion.
