The pain of a broken collarbone and shoulder blade is not the greatest discomfort at the moment for Moss Vale harness racing driver Damian Baxter.
What hurts more is not being able to jump into the trotting sulky.
Baxter suffered the injuries in a frightening road accident while riding his motorcycle to work last week.
The Wingecarribee Shire Council vehicle operator was involved in a collision with a truck on the Illawarra Highway in Moss Vale.
The accident will see him off work for about two weeks, but more depressingly out of race driving for about six weeks.
"It absolutely kills me not being able to drive," Baxter said. "Especially when the horses are in fine form."
Baxter prepares a couple of his own horses but is also the stable driver for his father David's 12-strong Beaconsfield Road team.
The injury that has sidelined Baxter junior has put a downer on his father's current demeanour.
"Yeah, I can't wait until he gets back to driving," Baxter senior said.
"The horses just go so much better for him than anyone else.
"I've had a couple of good drivers in Ben Sarina and Glenn McElhinney driving for me but I can't wait until Damian can get back."
The senior member of the family said Damian's familiarity with the horses was a telling factor in their success.
"He knows how they all go and how they train and they just seem to go for him," Baxter senior said.
The father-and-son combination have enjoyed a golden run during recent weeks, largely due to the winning exploits of stable patriarch Gifted Angel and Todds Delight.
Todds Delight has been a revelation for the stable, winning nine races and being placed eight times from 22 starts this season.
"He's been going great and nearly won his past two starts at Harold Park," Baxter junior said.
"He's giving his owners Dwayne (Kingdom), Darren (Wilson) and Garry (O'Brien) - who are all local blokes - a real thrill."
