Highlands cricketers were again disappointed by the weather on the weekend, with the first round of the Konica Cup being cancelled before a ball was bowled.
Despite being geared up for their clash against the Western Districts/University of Canberra side at Jamison Oval in Canberra on Sunday, the Highlands-Goulburn team was unable to play because of the conditions.
"It started to rain as we were coming into Canberra. The ground was covered and we were all keen to play, but it kept raining consistently until we knew there was no way we could play on the field," captain of the Highlands-Goulburn representative team Stuart Macpherson said.
"We waited two hours to see if it was going to stop, but it was bucketing down, the field was getting muddy and we knew the match was going to be unplayable."
Highlands-Goulburn is currently unsure of how the Konica Cup will proceed after the match was cancelled.
"Since all the teams were supposed to be playing in Canberra it's unlikely that any of the first round matches ended up being played," Macpherson said.
"It's safe to say that most of the games would have been cancelled."
The rain leaves all teams on even terms and looking forward to the next round, which will be held on November 14. Highlands-Goulburn will be facing the City-Suburban team and will be looking to avenge last year's loss.
"The City-Suburban team beat us last year in the second or third round, which surprised us," Macpherson said.
"It was a very close game. We scored 210 runs off 50 overs and they passed us with one wicket to spare. It went right down to the wire."
