ANZAC Day was very busy at Bowral Bowling Club.
With the Bowral RSL sub-branch now using the club as a base and having their ANZAC Day dinner in the club's dining room, and then relaxing to the entertainment provided by the lawn bowlers, an extra dimension has been added to the club's activities.
As well as the ex-servicemen, a number of out-of-town visitors and 48 bowlers and their friends and relatives, made a busy day for the staff.
The bowls - nominated triples - attracted 16 teams to contest the event, which was sponsored by Bowral RSL sub-branch.
The weather and perfect greens provided an ideal setting.
Prior to the commencement of the game, a spider was run with the prize of a bottle of Whiskey donated by a club member, with proceeds going to Legacy.
Joe Luketina, with his new red bowls, was the winner of the spider.
Two games of 11 ends were played and scored on highest winning margins.
With a sunny afternoon, the games went on until dark and just before sunset a "Flag Party" of ex servicemen paraded to the flagpole and performed the lowering of the flags ceremony while the Last Post was played. A moving solemn ritual.
John Cummins, president of the RSL sub-branch, presented the prizes at the conclusion of the game and spoke of his appreciation of the club's reception of the sub-branch.
The prize winners were: winners Steve Visintin, Gordon Turnbull and Jack Tonkin; second place Athol Hendrie, Bob Milner and Tony Kuketina; third place Dave Power, Tom Clement and Joe Luketina.
First game winners were Alan Hendrie, Bill Addie and Chris Benton and the second game was won by Bill Dodwell Terry Ballard and Steve Della.
The traditional game of two-up was played in the clubs lounge after bowls, and with donations from the punters and proceeds from the spider, $225 was raised for Legacy. In all, a fitting end to ANZAC Day.
On Wednesday, 64 men turned out for what is usually the nominated pairs game, but because of the temporary shortage of green space, there were seven rinks of pairs and six rinks of triples which filled both available greens.
