Ben bowled over by Sydney grade debut

Dashing Bargo batsman Ben Maher admits his head is still spinning after his shock inclusion in the Campbelltown first grade side for Saturday's clash with St George.

The gifted 17-year-old was dismissed for four by test leg spinner Stuart McGill after a surprise call up for the Sydney top grade season opener at Hurstville.

Maher was named in the side just six days before the clash and had to endure a gut wrenching week.

"I was stoked to be named but it was a bit hard to sleep," he said.

"I was packing it to be honest but once I got out there I just treated it as another game.

"It's a bit disappointing to get out so cheaply but it was a great experience."

The big hitting teenager copped the traditional newcomers welcome to the top grade with a head hunting bouncer in his very first ball.

But the number six batsman held his composure and belted the next ball for four before McGill came on and trapped his in front.

"I was really hoping to make a better start but at least I didn't give my wicket away," he said.

"I've targeted first grade for a while now, I just didn't think it would happen so soon."

Maher joined the Campbelltown Ghosts last season and played fourth grade for the club as well as two years in the Green Shield.

He has also represented at state level when he strapped on the pads for the NSW under-17s in last year's Australian Championships.

Maher hopes to use his experience in the Sydney competition as a platform to bigger things in the sport.

"I really want to be a professional cricketer and this is a good start," the talented left hander said.

Highlands cricket identity Keith Wyatt is keeping a watchful eye on Maher as head coach of the Campbelltown Ghosts.
