Beaten but not broken

15 Apr, 2009 12:29 PM
WINGELLO greyhound Did I Entertain was bumped, blocked and battered but still managed to run a gallant sixth in NSW’s biggest greyhound race, the Golden Easter Egg, at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The brindle dasher drew box seven and got off to a flying start.

He headed to the first corner neck and reck with leaders El Galo and Miss Elly Mint but was bumped wide and set back a couple of lengths.

Did I Entertain recovered to contest again at the second-last turn before being bumped out once more.

And by then it was too late and Robert Arnold’s champion dog was pushed back to sixth.

After the race, Arnold said he was nothing but proud of his champion.

"You have got to be proud of your animal," he said.

"Leading into the race we knew our dog was running up wind because of the box draw - all the speed was beneath him."

Arnold said it was "pretty cool" to be complaining about being bumped out of the race by Australia’s reigning greyhound of the year, El Galo and rising star Miss Elly Mint.

"He [Did I Entertain] was up there alongside two absolute champions but was knocked out of it," the trainer said.

"It’s a thrill a minute watching the race and now I am glad the week is all over and we can get back to our normal lives."

Arnold’s training partner Graeme Hughes said a race of such quality as the Easter Egg was determined by an ounce of luck.

"Anything was going to win out there tonight," Hughes said.

Arnold and Hughes will this week discuss the racing future of Did I Entertain.

Hughes said he was keen on seeing the star race in the Queensland Derby at the end of the month but Arnold said he would struggle to travel up there in time.

Arnold said he would have a look at other "free for all" grade races but would first give his dog a one week rest.
