Aussie Crabs give spectators an indoor volley good show

27 May, 2002 08:25 AM

More than 200 players descended on the Highlands for the Moss Vale Volleyball annual carnival held during the weekend.

The two-day event hosted players from Moss Vale, Sydney, ACT, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Musslebrook.

But it was the display put on by the Australian Disabled Sitting Volleyball team, the Aussie Crabs that had spectators in awe.

The Aussie Crabs challenged teams at Moss Vale Basketball stadium with association president John Bailey said it was great for clubs to get the chance to see them in action.

"It gave players a difference perspective for the game plus it promotes their sport," he said.

"Organisers said a majority of players were abled body."

Bailey said the key to the sitting game was that both bottom cheeks had to be on the floor when you hit the ball.

"You can run from one spot to another as long as you are on the floor when you hit the ball," he said.

Bailey hailed the event as a success saying that they improved on numbers from last year.

"The whole weekend was a great boost to the sport," he said.

"Last year we only had 18 teams where as this year we had 27 competing in men, women's and mixed divisions.

"Once word gets around I'm sure we will keep attracting more numbers and it will get bigger and better.

"Next year we are expecting to have 35 teams."

Bailey said it had been a close competition in the men's division with no team really copping a hiding.

"The final was between Manly and ANU but Manly is the stronger side," he said.

"Moss Vale came fifth, which isn't a good result but it was a good experience."

Men's division one: Manly d ANU 3-1.

Women's division one: Sydney North d Hills 3-0.

Women's division two: Sydney North d Sydney North Knox 3-1.
