Skiing is one of those sports that, for obvious reasons, just has to be played or competed in outside the district.
Over the years the Southern Highlands has produced a number of top skiers, and now we can add the junior "Sportsperson of the Month", Alex Aldridge, to that elite list.
The Frensham Year 11 student placed third in the Australian and New Zealand Continental Cup Slalom, held in the New South Wales and Victorian snowfields in August.
In a field full of top local and international skiers, Alex was the first-placed Australian competitor.
Two Europeans filled the first two spots, but Alex showed her class by beating a host of Australian, New Zealand and European competitors.
In what has been a very successful ski season, Alex has performed extremely well in state and school skiing championships.
She has won the NSW Championship for her age in slalom and has first and second placings in the Northern Division Interschool Championships, including winning the open women's division.
Introduced to skiing at the tender age of three, Alex has been racing for nearly 10 years. She started racing when she attended Gib Gate, which has a rich history of skiing success.
Alex will receive her Sportsperson of the Month award, along with Jo Bisby and Graham Isedale, at the annual presentation of the Berrima District Sports Awards, on Friday February 17 next year.
