A touch of green and gold for Acton

29 May, 2002 08:27 AM

It's not unusual for an athlete to represent their country once but to be called up a third time is outstanding in anyone's books.

For 50-year-old John Acton donning the green and gold a third time is something he did not expect.

"At my age you don't often get a crack at wearing green and gold for a third time," he said.

"I am getting older so you don't expect to get picked because there are a lot of younger players to choose from.

"Especially being based in the Highlands where the only way selectors notice you is if you make it to State."

Acton jets off overseas with the Australian over 45's side to tour South Africa, United Kingdom and Wales on June 24.

The agile player was picked for the Australian side after competing with Southern Suns at the Nationals held in Coffs Harbour during March.

"Nothing compares to representing your country because you not only do it for yourself or State but for the whole of Australia and not a lot of people get to do that," he said.

"When you play in front of large crowds not much goes through your head except the game.

"And it's not until after that the whole experience really sinks in."

Acton's first stop on the 26-day tour is Johannesburg where he will stay for eight days before venturing to the UK and Wales.

The tour is a lead up to the World Cup next year where Acton will be vying for a position in the side.

"At this stage I will be doing my best to get into the side but age might get me," he said.

Originally a league player with Moss Vale, Acton made the transition to touch 15 years ago where he had a stint with Mittagong before he went to Bowral.

From there he made the Australia 45s, which toured New Zealand in 1998 as well as the Singapore and UK tour in 2000.

"We won the championships in 2000 so we have that title to defend," he said.

"Australia is number one in the world because it's a more developed sport here.

"So hopefully we can retain our title this time round."

Acton asks if there is anyone who would like to sponsor him to go overseas to contact him on 48621468.
