 Video ump denies Turner

Video ump denies Turner

04 Dec, 2009 11:51 AM
A DISALLOWED goal, a close miss and a tough English backline denied Glenn Turner his second Champions Trophy goal in Melbourne on Tuesday night.

But despite failing to get on the scoreboard Turner played a significant role in the Kookaburras 2-1 win over England. Australia’s third win on the trot all but booked them a spot in Sunday’s final with one win needed from their last two games.

Turner told the News on the eve on the clash with the English that they would be a tough nut to crack and the Poms didn’t prove him wrong.

The English led 1-0 before Grant Schubert levelled the scores before halftime.

Turner, a former Bowral first grader, then narrowly missed with a shot across goals and had a goal disallowed by the video umpire for shielding the ball after he weaved past the English defence and slammed home a great tomahawk shot.

Des Abbot found the winner minutes later and Turner worked a penalty corner in the dying minute to seal the win.

Turner said Australian coach Ric Charlesworth wasn’t happy with the decision to disallow his brilliant solo effort.

“Ric said they got it wrong and it was bad for the game,” he said.

“It was the toughest game we have had and full credit to England, they stuck with us.”

“They play a attacking style like us.”

Charlesworth said it was the best performance so far.

“I think we played very well and you don’t always get the reward for what you do, but I was much happier with the quality of our hockey,” he said.

The 25-year-old said the Kookaburras attack was working well together.

“Our objective was to get quick ball movement and by doing that we create opportunities,” Turner said.

Turner said he was enjoying playing in his first international tournament on home soil.

“The crowds have been awesome and towards the end it was hard to hear out there. It’s great for hockey.”

The defending trophy holders played top seed Germany last night and take on Spain tomorrow before Sunday’s final.
