Robertson pip top four rivals in heated affair, Bowral fightback

28 Aug, 2008 11:03 AM
ROBERTSON look set to feature in the Illawarra first grade semi-finals after they edged out their rivals for the last finals spot, Fairy Meadow with a 2-1 win in the penultimate round at Welby on Sunday.

Bowral salvaged some pride with a strong second half in their 7-4 loss to Albion Park and Mittagong drew 3-3 with Dapto in the battle of the cellar dwellers.

Reece Polous got Robertson home with 45 seconds remaining off a short corner after Meadow drew level 10 minutes into the second term. James Wright gave the home team an early 1-0 advantage that they held onto into the break.

Robertson's defence was pushed to the limits in the second half when Nathan Wright, Nigel Croke and Matt Mauger were all sinbinned.

“We did pretty well with only 10 guys for 15 minutes of the second half. They played over us but we kept them out,” Robertson skipper Damian Gair said.

Robertson missed the finals last year after finishing in the top four in 2006 and Gair said they must beat Mittagong in the last round on Sunday to assure themselves a spot.

“If we don't beat Mitta on Sunday we don't deserve to be in the semis- no offence to Mittagong,” he said.
