Robertson hold on to remain undefeated

27 May, 2009 11:05 AM
A 10-PLAYER Roberston side held on to a slender 1-0 halftime lead to take the points against Bowral on Saturday.

With their captain-coach Joanne Bisby watching on after being sent off late in the first half, Robertson continually thwarted Bowral’s attacks to remain undefeated after four rounds.

In a physical game, Robertson were quick to get on the scoreboard when Jennifer Menzies gave her team the early advantage.

The two teams traded attacking raids to no avail before Bisby was sent off for lashing out at Bowral’s Kimberley Bunt.

Bowral had plenty of chances in the second period, but Robertson goalkeeper Ari Srgous and her defensive unit held firm.

An embarrassed Bisby said her send-off offence was completely out of character.

She said Bunt had tackled her from behind before a “brain explosion” caused her to deliberately hit Bunt in the shinpads.

“I’ve been playing hockey for 17 years and have never received a card,” the team leader said.

“I regret it totally, it’s not something I would normally do.”

Bisby will be hauled before the Southern Highlands Hockey judiciary tomorrow night.

The captain said she was proud of the way her team carried on without her.

“Considering the fact we were playing with only 10 players, the girls did very well to get the win,” she said.

Bisby nominated Brooke Handley as the player of the match, while custodian Srgous received three points in the official best-and-fairest vote.

If Robertson can beat Moss Vale this week, they will have beaten every other team in first grade.

o Mittagong showed they are slowly getting back to last year’s final-winning form with a 3-1 win over Moss Vale in the Friday night game.

With the rain pouring down, Mittagong were forced to play a short passing game and showed they still have what took them all the way in 2008.

Jemma Delamont arrived 20 minutes into the game, coming straight from work and had an immediate impact on the match.

Moss Vale opened the scoring from a short corner before Dellamont equalised just before halftime.

Goals to Pippin Saunders and Dea Cowen after the break sealed the 3-1 win.

Mittagong coach Yolande Isedale said Dellamont was instrumental in her team’s win.

“At centre striker she [Delamont] really took responsibility up front, and linked up early with her other strikers,” Isedale said.

“She can be very hard to contain when she plays this way.”

The coach said centre-half Natalie Thomson controlled the midfield extremely well and it was her team’s best performance of the year.
