MOSS VALE and Mittagong recorded wins in first grade women’s hockey over the weekend to move into first and equal second on the Southern Highlands Hockey competition table.
Mittagong beat rivals Robertson 3-1 on Friday night while Moss Vale defeated cellar-dwellers Burrawang 3-0.
Mittagong shot to a 2-0 lead against Robertson courtesy of goals to Sassie Economos and Jemma Delament.
Economos’ goal came from a loose ball in the circle while Delamont scored from a Cindy Garard pass.
Goals were split one-apiece in the second half, with Mittagong’s Megan Eringa scoring from a Delamont pass in the 43rd minute before Emma Bisby scored Robertson’s consolation goal late in the game.
Mittagong coach Yolande Isedale said her team’s defensive pressure was vital in setting up the win.
“Our defence absorbed a lot of pressure early in the first half and did well to contain Robertson’s attack,” Isedale said.
“This win was a great team effort.”
When the two teams met earlier this season, Robertson scored a close 3-2 win.
Robertson coach Jo Bisby said both teams were missing a few players but was pleased with how her team played. She nominated Kylie Bisby as her team’s best.
“She [Kylie] missed a couple of weeks with a leg injury but it was good to have her back and I’m sure she will be back to her best soon,” Jo Bisby said.
“Mittagong are always a tough opponent and last Friday was no different.”
In the other game, two goals to Moss Vale’s Hannah Menzies set up a 2-0 halftime lead against Burrawang before Kate Lewis extended the lead to 3-0 in the second term.
The win takes Moss Vale to the head of the table.
Moss Vale coach Sandra Sharpe said her team was better than the 2008 side that lost in the grand final.
“It’s virtually the same team as last year but there has been a huge increase in skill level and commitment to the whole aspect of the game,” she said.
“At training and on the field the intensity and commitment has improved.”
Burrawang coach Trevor Donovan said Moss Vale deserved the 3-0 win and was disappointed with his team’s first half defence.
“We were sloppy inside the circle in the first half but the second half was much better,” he said.
Burrawang had a number of chances to score in the second term but failed to capitalise. Donovan said his team had struggled to score goals all season.
“We had a break-away and one-on-ones with their goalie, but it wasn’t to be.”
This week’s women’s first grade games have been rescheduled with a number of players in the Southern Highlands under-18s team to compete at Albion Park over the coming weekend.
