Glenn Turner touches down

17 Mar, 2010 09:22 AM
HOCKEY World Cup star Glenn Turner has arrived back in Australia with something to work on when he turns out for Bowral Hockey Club later in the year.

The striker scored six goals at the World Cup, five of which were from general play and one from a penalty corner.

There were only three players above him on the goalscorers table, all of whom are “flickers”. Flickers get the plumb opportunities to score goals from penalty corners.

“I might have to start flicking,” Turner joked.

“I was the highest from the field, there was only the three flickers ahead of me.

“I did have a few chances in the final too but once that whistle blew it didn’t matter at all.”

Turner said scoring six goals was merely a bonus as his main focus was on the team’s overall result.

Of the six Turner scored in the tournament, his winner in the semi-final was his favourite.

“That one was really huge because if you get knocked out in the semi, you don’t even get a chance, it’s all over,” he said.

“It’s worse than losing the final”

Having arrived back on Australian soil, Turner had no regrets after heading to the World Cup, despite the security concerns.

For Turner, his experience in India off the field could not have been more positive.

“Security was great. We all felt safe, the motel was amazing and we had police escorts on the way to and from hockey with the streets blocked off,” Turner said.

“There were not any incidents. The people were supporting and it all ran smoothly.”

Turner turns his focus to hockey at home, where he will play in the Sydney first grade competition and train for the Canberra Lakers. And who knows, maybe a even a few matches for Bowral too.

Turner’s life returns to normal next week when he heads back to his job at Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
