Glenn Turner set to laugh with Kookaburras at Champions Trophy

BOWRAL boy Glenn Turner has Olympic aspirations.

After breaking into the Australian hockey team this year, Turner is determined to stay in the squad for the 2012 London Games.

The Olympics are more than two years away but the striker has a chance to impress Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth when the Aussies host the best five teams in the world at the Champions Trophy in Melbourne starting Saturday.

The Kookaburras are the defending trophy holders and are tied with Germany on nine titles as the most successful nation at the yearly tournament.

Turner performed well up front for the Kookaburras when he debuted during their European tour earlier this year and has scored 14 goals in 17 games. The former Bowral first grader said he was excited to play in front of family and friends this weekend, who bought tickets before Turner was even officially picked in the squad for the tournament.

The Olympic bronze medal-winning Kookaburras had a successful European tour beating Beijing gold medallists Germany 6-2 in the final of the Hamburg Masters in April. In warm-up games against Spain last weekend Australia thumped the Olympic silver medallists, who knocked Australia out of the Beijing gold medal match, 8-2 on Saturday before the Spaniards hit back with a 2-1 win on Sunday.

Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth said the team still had things to work on leading into the prestigious tournament.

“We have a lot of things to repair before the Trophy and what it tells me is we are not solid and no where near as solid as we can be. This just underlines it and we have a lot of work to do before our first game,” Charlesworth said.

Australia is currently the second best team in the world behind the Germans and has an easy lead into the Trophy with opening games against South Korea and the Netherlands this weekend. They face Germany and Spain, ranked third in the world, in their last two games.

Turner said he was making the most of the opportunity after moving to the Kookaburras base camp in Perth this year. The 25-year-old is living with his uncle in Fremantle after receiving an AIS scholarship to move west.

Impressing against the best teams in the world was the top of Turner’s priorities.

“Hopefully I can get a few goals and cement a spot in the team,” he said.

“It’s a big tournament and a lot of the teams won’t have seen me play which is a bit of an advantage.”

The Kookaburras have a big year in 2010 with the World Cup and Commonwealth Games in India and Turner is out to make sure he has a ticket to the sub-continent.

Fox Sports will broadcast all the games.
