Making the cut

28 Jan, 2007 05:47 PM
Former hairdresser turned jockey Ben Vassallo has ridden the first winner of his short career, winning the Rydges Capital Hill Maiden Handicap at Queanbeyan on Under the Dip last Friday.

The four-year-old chestnut gelding won by two-and-a-half lengths over the 1600m.

Under the Dip is by Sandpit and Bella Contessa and it was just his sixth start and first over 1600m.

It was only Vassallo's fifth ride for Berrima trainer Graeme Spackman who made the move to the Boomerang stables late last year after beginning his apprenticeship riding track work at Rosehill.
