BOWRAL athlete Rachel Shaw has been selected as one of two under-15 girls to represent NSW at the national championships in South Australia next month.
Shaw was selected for her all-round effort at the NSW state championships at Homebush last weekend.
Shaw's performance included bronze medals in triple jump and long jump and top-10 finishes in the 200m and 90m hurdles.
Shaw has competed for Bowral for many years and she trains in Wollongong once a week with a hurdles coach.
Shaw said she was excited to be in the team for the national championships but was a little apprehensive about running in the 800m.
This was the second year running that Bowral have a national representative with Christian Tozer last year winning the 1500m.
Shaw wasn't the only Bowral athlete on show in Homebush on the weekend.
Tyler Egan, competing at his first state championships, took a confident lead in the first lap of the under-9 800m but was just pushed out of the medals in the second lap to hold onto fourth place.
It was a gallant effort for his first state appearance and has been marked as a definite talent to watch for the future.
Hayden Shaw competed in the under-13 discus and shot put, under-17s Sean McMullen took on the high jump and Thomas Burke competed in the triple jump and hurdles.
Ethan Beard won bronze in the under-17 1500m and the 3000m which were his first Little Athletics state track medals.
Beard was happy to have gained two state medals but he was disappointed he couldn't win a gold.
He was in a winning position with just more than one lap to go in the 3000m when he was hit with a severe cramp.
Beard battled pain to finish in third position.
If he had have won gold, it would have been his first in eight years of trying. It would have been just reward for all his daily training sessions and service to the club.
All of the above athletes qualified for the state championships through the Wollongong regional championships.
27 athletes brought home a swag-full of medals from the regionals.
Tyler Egan won the 800m and came third in the long jump.
Hayden Shaw came second in the shot put and third in discus
