ROBERTSON-Burrawang have struggled this season to show the form that took them to last year’s grand final, but they are hitting their straps just in time for this year’s playoffs.
Robertson lead Patris for much of their game on Saturday, before Patris equalised to make it 2-2 and split the competition points.
Robertson went ahead courtesy of goals to Adam Bartlett and 17-year-old Harry Woods, who was called into side from Robertson’s third grade team.
Robertson coach Rod Fleming said his team’s defence absorbed a lot of pressure from Patris but their strikers looked dangerous on the counter.
“We got them on the counter attack and caused them some trouble,” Fleming said.
“It was a pretty even match and both teams threw a lot at each other.”
Fleming said the draw, on the back of last weekend’s unlucky 1-0 loss to Yerrinbool-Bargo, meant Robertson would carry some momentum into the playoffs.
“If our attitude’s right and we play as a team then we’ll be a serious contender in the finals,” he said.
“Particularly because we’ll be the underdog heading into the finals and teams facing us will have the added pressure of being expected to win.”
Patris coach Tim Stone said his team had struggled to reproduce the stunning soccer that they played early in the season.
“Every week we seem to be missing a few key players so we have to shuffle the team around a bit,” Stone said.
“But we already know there will be three regulars out for the semi-finals so we have to get used to it.”
Stone said there was no need to hit the panic button just yet.
Patris’ goals were scored by Shane Fitzpatrick and man-of-the-match Matt Wortz.
Wortz’s goal from 20-yards out was particularly spectacular.
